FinCrime Associate
VertoFX
At Verto, we're redefining how businesses in emerging markets move money across borders. Our platform supports fast, cost-effective payments and liquidity solutions for high-growth companies in Africa, Asia, and beyond. What started as a foreign exchange product for the Nigerian Naira has grown into a market-leading global payments infrastructure — one that processes billions in volume annually.
We're backed by world-class investors like Y Combinator, Quona, and MEVP, and we power payments for some of the world's most disruptive businesses. Recognised as Fintech Startup of the Year at the Fintech Awards London 2022, we continue to scale fast, with compliance and risk management at the heart of our mission.
As part of this exciting growth, we are looking to hire two Fincrime Associates to join our dynamic Compliance team. While both roles are integral to maturing and scaling our financial crime framework, they have slightly different focuses:
One role is centred on process enhancement and risk operations, driving the efficiency and effectiveness of our financial crime controls.
The second role focuses on regulatory analysis and proactive risk management, ensuring our framework is robust and aligned with evolving global standards.
Please review both opportunities below and indicate in your application which role you feel most aligned with or interested in pursuing.
FinCrime Associate – Process & Risk Focus
This role is ideal for someone passionate about optimising operational processes, strengthening control frameworks, and leveraging data to drive improvements in financial crime prevention.
What You’ll Be Doing:
Refine and enhance the existing financial crime framework to ensure clarity, scalability, and alignment with evolving regulatory expectations.
Design, implement, and maintain a control testing framework to ensure the effectiveness of AML/CTF controls and drive accountability across processes.
Lead remediation projects, investigating control failures, conducting root cause analysis, developing and implementing action plans, and tracking resolution.
Build, configure, and manage dashboards and reporting tools to track breaches, generate actionable MI, and report to internal and external stakeholders.
Conduct breach trend analysis, identifying patterns or systemic issues, and recommending mitigation steps or improvements to processes and controls.
Perform financial crime data analysis to identify inefficiencies, optimise operational processes, and enhance the design of controls, products, and services.
Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to embed compliance by design and use data to inform future product development.
Maintain financial crime documentation, including operational procedures, risk assessments, and policies, ensuring regulatory alignment.
Contribute to compliance team training and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
Who You Are:
3–5 years of experience in financial crime compliance or risk operations within a fintech, payment institution, or regulated financial firm.
Proven ability to review and assess incidents for regulatory breach classification and severity.
Skilled in delivering control remediation and process improvements with measurable outcomes.
Comfortable working with data: conducting analysis, building dashboards, and identifying trends.
Practical understanding of AML/CTF regulatory frameworks, particularly around operational execution and monitoring.
Familiar with tools such as Jira, Looker, or similar BI/dashboard platforms.
Methodical, analytical, and process-oriented — you thrive in a scale-up environment and are able to work with minimal direction.
Professional certification (e.g., ICA, ACAMS) preferred.
FinCrime Associate – Regulatory & Analysis Focus
This role suits an individual with a strong analytical mind, adept at interpreting complex regulations, and proactive in managing compliance risks across diverse jurisdictions.

Conduct regulatory horizon scanning and support policy updates in response to legal and industry developments.
Assist in the creation and ongoing refinement of a scalable financial crime control testing framework.
Draft and maintain policies, procedures, and controls aligned with legal obligations and regulatory expectations.
Analyse regulatory requirements in foreign jurisdictions ahead of licence applications or market entry, ensuring Verto is operationally and procedurally prepared for new regulatory environments.
Carry out regulatory breach assessments, reviewing incidents to determine if they constitute a breach, assessing severity, and ensuring appropriate regulatory engagement where required.
Conduct risk assessments and gap analyses with a particular lens on regulatory adherence.
Support and respond to regulatory inquiries, audits, and partner due diligence.
Oversee SAR filings and liaise with law enforcement and banking partners as needed.
Collaborate with Product, Legal, and Ops teams to embed regulatory compliance in new and existing offerings.
Help deliver AML/CTF training to internal teams and raise awareness of evolving regulatory duties.

Excellent research and analytical skills with a high reasoning ability.
ICA, ACAMS, or similar professional certification preferred.
Experience with SARs, transaction monitoring, and policy development.
